There’s not really much more to say when it comes to 2020: The world is on pause – and so was Vienna.
The city’s neighbourhoods were disturbingly quiet. Not only in the early mornings, but even during lunch time, even on a sunny Saturday. Vienna’s famous 1st district: empty. Sure, back home in Zurich things were moving slower as well, but standing on the completely abandoned Heldenplatz made me realise how much downtown’s had changed within just a couple of months: No selfie sticks, no bright red tour buses, no bustling cafés. It was as if I was walking through a yet to be opened exhibition, the only guest in a vast museum.
All this was to be expected given the global circumstances. Yet, I was still surprised by how unsettling the slowdown of everyday life felt in a large city like Vienna.
